Bio-Processing Unit (BPU) is an autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India) that has began to function as a member institute of the Mohali Biotechnology Cluster at Knowledge City, Mohali (Punjab). The institute campus under development is located in the neighborhood of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Indian Business School (ISB), Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) and Biotechnology Park at Mohali.
BPU aims to lead a knowledge based bio-processing mission through translational testing, optimization and up-scaling the existing technologies. Concomitantly, it also aims to have in-house innovational and developmental laboratory activities in niche and gap areas in this domain.
There is a growing gap between the research/laboratory bench technologies and tangible translational products of volume or value that actually emanate from them. It is in this perspective that the Department of Biotechnology envisioned to take up this facet of agri-produce or bio-produce as a 'Secondary Agriculture Initiative for Value Added Products".
The bio-processing itself has a very wide scope of work in research as well as developmental/application arena. It is the later domain that would forms the front of BPU's mission/activities. The research and innovation at the institute are planned to particularly address the gap areas and potential new scopes related to bio-processing for generating co-products of food, feed, phytochemicals and non-food/feed nature.
Besides primary agri-produce, secondary/surplus/spare biomass is aimed to be the feed stock for innovations and developments for scalable, viable, and sustainable utility products catering to start-up companies and entrepreneurs. Read more
